looking to submit? great! here's what to know. 

WHAT WE LOOK FOR:

When reviewing submissions, we keep in mind these three criteria: 

1. Is the work doing something new? We value work that breaks tradition, is inventive, high concept, and original. We welcome creative experiments!

2. Is the work as good as it can be? We expect work to follow the story through the end by having a complete narrative, as well as the appropriate story/genre/style structure. (Ex. When submitting a haiku, the piece must have a 5-7-5 syllable structure.) Pieces must be free of common grammatical errors. 

3. Does the work invoke strong feelings? We do not expect happy endings or sentiments we agree with. We try our best to be objective readers and editors. If your piece can incite strong feelings of joy, rage, sorrow, terror, etc., we know it is a piece for us.

We encourage artists of all backgrounds and experience levels to submit to Partially Shy. In sharing these criteria, we hope you take them into consideration when submitting to better your chances of acceptance. We look forward to reading your work! 

WHAT WE ACCEPT: 

• Fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, experimental writing that falls between genres, and art (basically anything that can be displayed digitally). 

  • Fiction/essays/long-form work: up to 3 pieces, 15 pages TOTAL

  • Poetry: up to 3 poems, no page limit

  • Art: up to 3 pieces

• Simultaneous submissions: Send 'em in! That said, please make a note of this in your submission. Additionally, please make us aware of any withdrawals as soon as possible. 

WHAT WE DO NOT ACCEPT:

• We do not accept previously published work at this time. We also do not accept songs, playlists, recordings of musical performances.

• We do not, under any circumstances, accept any pieces encouraging hate. That means things like racism, zionism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, etc. 

• We do not accept content containing gratuitous violence (graphic depictions of ra*e, assualt, etc.) 

• WE DO NOT ACCEPT ANYTHING GENERATED BY AI

WHERE YOU CAN SEND IT:

• All submissions can be sent to partiallyshylitmag@gmail.com. Your email (not on the piece) should include: 

  • your name as you would like it written if accepted

  • your pronouns

  • a short third-person bio (max 100 words) that you'd feel comfortable accompanying your piece(s)

  • a PDF of your submission.

• Subject line: SUBMISSION: Name, Genre, Title of piece

EXPEDITED SUBMISSIONS:

• Paying for expedited submissions does not guarantee your acceptance into the magazine!!! 

• We appreciate all expedited submissions because your money helps us run the magazine <3

• We do not pay our contributors at this time (although we hope to one day)

• Send confirmation of payment (screenshot of Venmo receipt) with email

WHAT TO DO IF ACCEPTED:

•  If accepted, you agree to grant us first North American physical and electronic rights. (we ARE making prints soon!) We also take non exclusive archival rights to house your work on our site and/or in print for however long P.S is operational or thereafter. All profits made from prints will go back into the cost of printing. 

• We may post about your work using excerpts of your writing, images from your art etc. while crediting you! We will never make changes or revisions without your consent. YOUR WORK IS YOURS! If you don't want us posting it, please let us know!

• If you are a minor, you are under no obligation to disclose that to us, but if you choose to we ask that your parent/guardian fill out this permission form. (If you're a parent/guardian and your child sent us a piece of work that we then publish please don't sue us, we can't force them to tell us if they're 13, but we can take the work down if it is an issue.)

• We reserve the right to reject any submission we feel does not, respectfully, fit the vibe.
